Donald McGavran (1897 - 1990) is remembered as one of the premier missiologists of the 20th century and the father of the Modern-Day Church Growth Movement. I consider him the single most influential thinker on how we do ministry today.
His life’s work is the foundation of what we as pastors know about growing healthy, impactful churches. If you have worked to grow a ministry and reach people for Jesus, you have been influenced by McGavran.
I never met Dr. McGavran. But I discovered his wisdom through those who came after him — through books by C. Peter Wagner, Elmer Towns, Thom Rainer and Gary L. McIntosh. I continued to learn all I could about him and have made it a practice to secure, study and catalog every McGavran book and article I can get my hands on!
